After reading this article the reader should be able to:
- Classify patients’ heart failure signs and symptoms into multiple existing classification schemes.
- Identify a patient with “advanced” heart failure and describe the timing of referral for consideration of advanced therapies.
- Describe the stages of cardiogenic shock and the potential short-term medical and mechanical therapies that can be deployed as treatment.
- Identify relative and absolute contraindications to heart transplantation and left ventricular assist device therapy, as well as describe the complications of this therapy that limit graft and device longevity.
- Describe the role of palliative care in the treatment of patients with end-stage heart failure.
