Imaging for Predicting, Detecting, and Managing Complications after TAVR (JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging May 2019)
Description

The management of patients with valvular heart disease is increasingly reliant on multimodality cardiac imaging. In patients with severe aortic stenosis considered for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), careful preprocedural planning with multimodality imaging is necessary to avoid and prevent complications during the procedure. During or immediately after the procedure, rapid echocardiographic assessment is important to assess the new valve’s function and manage major complications. Echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) all share important roles in the postprocedural evaluation of abnormal transcatheter valve function. In our review, we discuss the use of multimodality imaging for predicting, detecting, and managing complications after TAVR.

  • Describe the parameters involved in assessing the severity of paravalvular regurgitation after TAVR by echocardiography and their limitations.
  • Identify roles of echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography (CT), and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging after TAVR.
  • Discuss the implications of transcatheter heart valve dysfunction assessed by cardiac CT after TAVR.
