Pdf Summary
The study examined the relationship between social determinants of health (SDOH) and cardiovascular health (CVH) among adult cancer survivors in the United States. Using data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey (2013-2017), the study found that worse SDOH were associated with poorer CVH, with a stronger association in younger individuals and women. Specific domains of SDOH, such as economic stability, neighborhood environment, and food insecurity, were independently associated with worse CVH. The study highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address social, economic, and environmental factors affecting the CVH of cancer survivors, especially among vulnerable populations like younger individuals and women. The study underscores the importance of considering SDOH factors in promoting cardiovascular well-being among cancer survivors and suggests targeted interventions to optimize their cardiovascular outcomes. Efforts at the clinical and policy levels are needed to reduce social disparities in CVH among cancer survivors and enhance access to quality healthcare for this population. Further research is recommended to explore additional mediators of the observed associations between SDOH and CVH and address reverse causation and residual confounding. The study provides insights into the substantial impact of social determinants on the cardiovascular health outcomes of cancer survivors and suggests strategies to improve their overall well-being and health outcomes.
